Pau travel guide

Pau, an English and American resort: a surprising history

In the nineteenth century, Pau became an internationally known winter resort. British and American visitors were attracted by its climate, its view of the Pyrenees and a new way of life centred on sport and society.

The birth of a resort

Travel accounts praising Pau’s mild winter climate helped attract wealthy foreign families. Hotels, villas and landscaped gardens transformed several districts while the promenade overlooking the Pyrenees became the city’s emblem.

Sport and social life

The foreign community encouraged equestrian pursuits, hunting and golf. Pau Golf Club, founded in 1856, is an enduring reminder of this period, as are several villas and English-inspired names around the city.

Traces to discover on foot

From the Château to the Boulevard des Pyrénées, the centre still reveals this cosmopolitan story. Look at façades, gardens and viewpoints, then continue towards the historic villas west of the centre.

This heritage is best explored slowly. Combine the Château, the Boulevard des Pyrénées and the city’s heritage information, and check opening times for museums and monuments.
